PETITION: Hurstpierpoint Deserves a Dedicated District Councillor
Alison Bennett is currently serving as both the Member of Parliament for Mid Sussex and a Mid Sussex District Councillor for Hurstpierpoint.
Being an MP is widely understood to be a full-time role, with significant responsibilities in Parliament and across the constituency. District councillors also carry serious local duties — supporting residents, attending council meetings, and engaging with local decisions that directly affect day-to-day life.
Residents in Hurstpierpoint deserve full-time representation at district level. We believe one person cannot reasonably give proper time and focus to both roles at once.
That is why we are calling on Alison Bennett MP to be clear about her priority — and to stand down as a district councillor so that local residents can choose a dedicated representative through a by-election.
Why We Are Asking for Your Support
- Hurstpierpoint residents deserve a district councillor who can focus fully on the ward.
- Both roles carry major responsibilities. Two demanding public jobs cannot be treated as part-time commitments.
- A by-election would allow residents to choose a dedicated councillor with the time and capacity to serve properly.
- This is not about party politics. It is about representation, accountability, and fairness for residents.
- Democracy works best when elected representatives are fully present and fully accountable to the communities they serve.
We are standing up for Hurstpierpoint and for the principle that local people deserve a dedicated voice on their district council.
Our Call to Alison Bennett MP
We call on Alison Bennett to:
- Clarify which role is her priority
- Stand down as a Mid Sussex District Councillor for Hurstpierpoint
- Allow residents to elect a dedicated district councillor through a by-election
Your ward. Your voice. Your choice.
If you agree that Hurstpierpoint deserves full-time local representation and that residents should be able to choose a dedicated district councillor, please add your name to this petition.
